Lath Back Windsor Chairs
The lath back Windsor chair is a traditional English design valued for its strength and practicality. Instead of turned spindles supporting the crest rail as seen in the English comb back, the back is formed from gently curved wooden laths, which also provide a degree of natural lumbar support.
The word “lath” refers to a flat strip of wood, and should not be confused with “lathe”, the machine used for turning components such as legs and stretchers.
Each chair is handmade to order in my Somerset workshop using traditional Windsor chairmaking methods, with beech components and either an ash or elm seat, all made from locally sourced timber.

A traditional English farmhouse lath back carver. The double ‘H’ stretcher, the strongest stretcher pattern, together with the robust English construction gives the chair a real sense of solidity. Traditionally made from beech with an ash seat. Finished with Danish oil and hot wax.
A traditional English lath back dining chair. Available with either a 16-inch seat for dining tables or a more compact 14-inch version for smaller spaces. The chair shown here has the 14-inch seat. Traditionally made with beech components and an ash seat, finished with Danish oil and hot wax.
These chairs are handmade to order. For pricing and commissioning information, please see the Pricing & Commission page.
