English Style Windsor Chairs
English Windsor chairs are among the most recognisable forms of the Windsor tradition, similar in concept to the American sack back. The designs shown here draw on classic English examples, combining strong, practical construction with balanced proportions suited to everyday use as well as traditional interiors.
Each chair is handmade to order in my Somerset workshop using traditional Windsor chairmaking methods and carefully selected locally sourced timber.
An English high back carver. This classic design has a graceful double bow back bow, pierced splat, curved arm supports and crinoline stretcher. Traditionally made with ash components and an ash or elm seat, finished with Danish oil and hot wax.
An English low back carver. I have seen these called “Low Bow” or “Yeoman’s Bow” chairs. Traditionally made with a pierced back splat, crinoline stretcher, ash components and an ash or elm seat, finished with Danish oil and hot wax.
An English back hoop diner. Traditionally made with a crinoline stretcher, single bow, ash components and an ash or elm seat, finished with Danish oil and hot wax.
These chairs are handmade to order. For pricing and commissioning information, please see the Pricing & Commission page.
